We got our first iPhone device on 9th January 2007 at the Macworld Conference and Expo event in San Francisco. With this the share price of the company rose to $92.57 and its market cap was reported to be $79.63 billion. This handset was revealed by Steve jobs, who took the stage to announce it’s first-ever iPhone, combining a mobile phone, widescreen iPod and internet communications device into a single touchscreen device.
The first iPhone device sported a 3.5 inch display with 320 x 480 pixels resolution and 163 ppi density. It was provided with an internal storage of 8/16GB and 4GB RAM for faster processing speed. The primary camera was 2 MP rear snapper and it was available in only black color variant.
On 10th July 2008, the first app store was launched with 552 apps, 135 out of which were free. Just after the app store was launched, there were reports that in the first weekend only over 10 million apps were downloaded from the store. Major hit of the App Store was Sega Super Monkey Ball which was downloaded over 300,000 times in the first month.
Apple iPhone 3G:
The second iOS phone of the company was iPhone 3G announced on 9th June 2008 at WWDC event at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Around 5,407,000 iPhone devices were sold out till this date and the share price of Apple rose to $181.61. However, the camera and processor on this smartphone remained unchanged from that in the original phone but 3G connectivity was added to it by the Cupertino’s giant. The 3G connectivity option provided this handset with a great speed for web browsing and GPS.
Apple’s 3G was released on 11th July 2008 with a 3.5 inch display having 480 x 320 pixels resolution and 163 ppi density. There was an internal memory of 16GB and 8GB RAM for faster processing speed. There is a 2MP rear snapper and will come in black and white variants. This smartphone was packed with the iOS 2 mobile operating system.
Apple iPhone 3GS:
Apple’s iPhone 3GS was the most powerful, fastest iPhone till date and looked almost identical to the iPhone 3G handset. But was improved greatly on the specifications with a new 600 MHz processor and 256MB RAM. There was an internal storage of 32GB and 3MP back camera for video shooting for the first time.
This handset was released on 19th June 2009 with a display size of 3.5 inches and 320 x 480 pixels resolution and 163 per pixel density. It was available with 8/16GB internal memory and could also be availed with 32GB storage. There was a rear snapper of 3MP which could click high quality pictures and was available in black and white color options. It was provided with a iOS 3 software.
Apple iPhone 4:
Apple’s iPhone 4 was announced on 10th June 2010 at WWDC held in Moscone Center at San Francisco. The share price of the company at that time was $250.51 billion. Apple tried to change everything again with this handset. It had a Retina display with 326 pixels resolution and VGA front facing camera along with an improved 5 MP rear snapper. This handset is build using gorgeous, stainless steel frame.
This handset was released on 24th June 2010 with a 3.5 inch display and 640 x 960 pixels resolution and 326 pixels per inch density. Apple had provided this smartphone with 8/16/32 GB internal memory and runs on the iOS 4 software. It had a 3 MP rear snapper & 0.3 MP front facing camera and will come in black & white color options. Overall, the iPhone 4 was packing an improved camera, HD video shooting, new design, video calling and much more.
Then, the declining health of Steve Job due to pancreatic cancer forced him to stand down as the CEO of Apple, naming Tim Cook as his successor.
Apple iPhone 4S:
The iPhone 4S from the Cupertino’s giant was announced on 4th October 2011, which brought its share price to $372.5 and the iPhones sold till date were 128,956,000. This handset was the most amazing iPhone till date as Apple gave birth to the Siri app. It can be said as a hands-free means to control your mobile phone. Also, with this smartphone the rear snapper on the iPhone device jumped to 8MP count with 1080 pixels video recording.
It was released on 14th October 2011 with 8/16/32/64GB internal storage. Apple iPhone 4S came with 3.5 inch display with 960 x 640 pixels resolution and runs on the iOS 5. There was a rear camera of 8MP and 0.3 MP front facing camera. It was made available in two color options i.e. black and white. The Cupertino’s giant provided this handset with a better camera and faster processor. After just one day of the launch of iPhone 4S, Steve Jobs died.
Apple iPhone 5:
Apple unveiled its iPhone 5 on 12th September 2012 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. This was the first Apple smartphone to get the Lightning Connector and was released on 14th September 2012. It was packed with a 4 inch Retina HD with 1136 x 640 pixels resolution and 326 ppi. There was an 8MP primary camera and 1.2MP front facing sensor. This is a new A6 chip, featuring iOS 6 with Passbook and FaceTime over mobile data. Until this time about 50 billion apps were downloaded by the users from the App Store.
Apple iPhone 5S & 5C:
Apple unveiled the iPhone 5C and 5S smartphones on 10th September 2013 with a fingerprint sensor on board called TouchID. There was a 4 inch Retina HD display with 1136 x 640 pixels resolution and 326 per pixel density. The Cupertino’s giant released these handsets on 20th September in three variants with 8/16/32/64GB internal storage. There was an 8MP rear camera and front facing camera with 0.3 MP count and runs on the iOS 7 platform.
Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus:
After months of speculation, Apple finally announced its new super-sized handsets on 9th September 2014 at Flint Center for Performing Arts at Cupertino. Both these smartphones were released on 19th September 2014 with a 4.7 inch Retina HD and 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 326 ppi. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets have an 8MP rear camera and 1.2 MP front facing camera. Both these phones came packed with the iOS 8 software.
Apple released its contactless payment solution in US in October 2014 but hit UK in July 2015. During the launch time, it was available in dozens of franchises such as Nando’s, McDonald’s, Subway and Starbucks. Apple store has 1.5 million apps available in 2015 and crossed over 100 billion app downloads.
Currently, Apple has iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as its flagship phones and is working on the iPhone 7 handset which is not expected to get rolled out until the third quarter of this year. This smartphone will get a 4.7 inch IPS LED display and 12 MP rear camera for better picture quality. It proved out to be a great success with huge number of units sold out in a few days after its launch.
